Second chance financing

Car loans when you're new to Canada

Your credit history didn't immigrate with you — Canadian bureaus start everyone at zero. That doesn't keep you off the road: lenders in our network run newcomer programs that approve based on your status, income, and documents rather than a Canadian credit history you haven't had time to build.

The short version

  • 01AutoAgents is an OMVIC-registered online dealership (registration #5645627) with locations in Ottawa, Ontario and Langley, British Columbia.
  • 02We arrange financing through a network of 10+ prime, near-prime, and subprime lenders, working with credit scores from 480 to 850.
  • 03Every vehicle we sell passes a third-party mechanical inspection and carries a provincial safety certification before it goes online.
  • 04Credit history does not transfer between countries; newcomers start with an empty Canadian credit file regardless of their record at home.
  • 05Lenders in our network offer newcomer programs that consider permanent residents and holders of work or study permits without established Canadian credit history.

A reported vehicle loan is one of the first and fastest ways for a newcomer to establish a Canadian credit file.
01

Why your credit didn't come with you

Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada only track credit activity inside Canada, so even a spotless record abroad arrives here as a blank file. Every newcomer — permanent resident, worker, or student — starts from the same zero, and the standard lending system isn't built for that.

Newcomer auto programs are. They substitute what you can prove today — your immigration status, your income or employment offer, and your documents — for the Canadian history you haven't had time to accumulate. Arriving without a credit file is treated as the expected starting point, not a defect.

02

How newcomer approval works

Lenders will want to confirm your status in Canada — a PR card, work permit, or study permit — alongside income: recent pay stubs, or a signed employment offer if you've just landed a job. A Canadian bank account for payments and a driver's licence you can legally drive on complete the core file. If you're still on an international licence, ask us about your province's exchange rules and timelines.

A down payment strengthens a newcomer application the same way it strengthens any thin file, and many newcomers arrive with savings that put this lever within reach. From there, placement is our job: we route your application to the lenders whose newcomer programs actually fit your status and income, rather than letting a general-purpose lender decline a file it was never designed to read.

03

Honest expectations

Without Canadian history, your first loan will price above prime — the lender is pricing the absence of data, not doubting you personally. The rate improves with the file: a reported loan paid on time for a year builds exactly the Canadian history the system wants, and refinancing at better terms becomes realistic quickly.

Beware of anyone advertising guarantees to newcomers. No lender approves every application, and reputable newcomer programs still verify status and income. A straight answer and correctly placed application will serve you better than a slogan.

The process

Three steps, one agent

1Tell us your situation

Complete the short pre-qualification form or call us. One application — we place it deliberately with the lenders most likely to say yes, instead of blasting it everywhere and stacking hard inquiries.

2Review real options

Your agent comes back with the offers our lender network actually returned — term, rate, and any fees on one page. No markup on the lender's rate, no pressure, and you can compare against your own bank's approval.

3Choose your vehicle and drive

Pick from our inspected inventory or have us source the right vehicle from anywhere in Canada within your approved budget. Pick up in Ottawa or Langley, or have it delivered.

Checklist

What to have ready

A complete file gets a faster, better-placed answer. Nothing here is a dealbreaker — bring what you have and your agent will sort out the rest.

  • Driver's licence — Canadian, or your international licence plus your provincial exchange plan

FAQ

Common questions

Can I get a car loan in Canada without Canadian credit history?

Yes. Newcomer programs at several lenders in our network approve applicants based on immigration status, income, and documentation instead of a Canadian credit file. These programs exist precisely because credit history doesn't transfer across borders.

Can I finance a car on a work permit or study permit?

Many lenders accept work-permit holders with proof of income, and some accept study-permit holders, particularly with a down payment or co-signer. Lenders generally prefer the permit's remaining validity to comfortably cover the loan term, so bring your permit dates to the conversation.

Do I need a Canadian driver's licence to finance a vehicle?

You need to be legally able to drive and insure the vehicle, which usually means a Canadian licence sooner rather than later. Ontario and BC both let newcomers drive on an international licence for a limited period and offer licence-exchange programs for many countries — we can walk you through the timeline for your situation.

Will a car loan help me build Canadian credit?

Yes — it's one of the fastest starts available. The loan reports to Equifax and TransUnion monthly, so you begin accumulating Canadian payment history immediately. Pair it with a secured credit card and both accounts build your file in parallel.

Do I need a SIN to apply?

Lenders use your Social Insurance Number to locate or establish your credit file, so having one smooths the process — most newcomers eligible to work already do. If your situation is unusual, talk to your agent; requirements vary by lender and we'll tell you exactly what yours needs.
